Low Fat Diets -a Valuable Part of Weight Loss Programs and Weight Loss Products
Lower Fat Diets are Here to Stay
With so much focus on 'low carbs' in the diet industry, it’s no wonder that low fat
diets have been placed on the backburner. However, they should not be forgotten
in the wake of the Atkins diet and the
Zone diet. Even though these
weight loss programs and
their associated weight loss products don’t coin themselves
as “low fat”, it doesn’t
mean that this somewhat ‘old-school’ philosophy should be forgotten.
When a dominant diet philosophy catches on in the marketplace consumers and
companies alike tend to go to extremes. For example, 15 years ago few low
fat items existed. Nowadays, because the trend rose in popularity, most
products have a low fat counterpart.
At the height of the low fat craze,
people wanted to eat everything 'low fat' as that was thought to be “healthy.”
What people didn’t realize is that by taking the fat out of products
inherently containing some fat, modifications were made which often resulted in
higher sugar counts to make up for the loss of fat.
Therefore, people thought they could eat an extra-large no-fat frozen yogurt or venti Starbucks coffee Frappuccino and not gain a pound.
They
also didn't think about the
massive calories they were consuming and their
actions would affect their
weight loss
management. Hence the birth of the low carbohydrate diet.
All in all, low fat items are still viable and good to observe in
moderation. Purchasing low fat dairy items and lean meats is as wise as watching
caloric intake or carbs. The low fat diet should be enjoyed and
continue to be embraced. After all, the American Heart Association didn’t go to
the trouble of printing a recipe book of low fat,
low cholesterol diet recipes for no
good reason.
