An Index of Low Carb Diet Programs
The Big Three
Low carb diet programs are weight loss
systems which reduce the amount of carbs consumed in a diet. Practically,
this means taking out sugar, junk food, specialty coffees, other coffee-shop
treats and more. Each program endorses an
eating plan to lose weight and
greatly reduces carbohydrate consumption to garner weight loss results.
Atkins Diet
Although the Atkins diet made a big comeback 4 years ago, it is the oldest
low carb diet of the bunch. Since its
initial introduction in the 1970’s, this diet pioneered the way for
low carb dieting as it charted the course
for similar diets. Atkins greatly limits carbohydrate consumption but endorses
most meats, cheeses and items like peanut butter. With the high-fat foods this
diet prescribes, it almost seems impossible that someone would
lose weight, but
people who’ve tried this diet do lose weight because they end up eating fewer
calories.
The Zone Diet
The Zone was coined in the past 10 years by a biochemist from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology who believed that people were not eating the correct balance of
foods. This diet prescribes eating a balanced ratio of the main food groups at every meal and
encourages people to eat according to its formula. Many Hollywood stars and
sports teams sing the praises of this diet plan as their answer to a
healthy
diet and weight loss.
South Beach Diet
Started by a South Florida Cardiologist, this carb-conscious diet was originally intended for
the Doctor’s heart patients as a means to lower their risk of heart disease. In
the meantime, his patents ended up losing weight.
Although this diet would not call itself a low carb diet, it divides carbs into
two camps: ‘good carbs’ and ‘bad carbs.’ The
South Beach
Diet plan is generally a mix of the Atkins and Zone diet plans.
