Making Wise Food Choices for a Heart Healthy Diet
Don’t Go Breakin’ my Heart
Eating a heart healthy diet is good for those with and without pending heart
conditions. Eating a low cholesterol diet
starts in the grocery store, continues into the kitchen and finishes in the
body. These stages are the cornerstones of a heart-conscious
diet program.
A cholesterol lowering diet
limits the consumption of saturated and trans fats like fatty meats, ice cream
and the like. Thus, eating a heart-conscious diet involves the use of
lean meats, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy
products.
Despite these guidelines, the American Heart Association advises that there are
certain ‘gotchas’ even within these healthy food groups. For example, when
shopping in the produce section, they say to avoid avocadoes, coconuts and
olives as they are high in monounsaturated fat and calories. Furthermore, when
cooking with oil, use sparingly and stick to olive or sunflower oils are they
are low in saturated fatty acids.
Following a heart-conscious diet takes some adjustment but once you’re into the
groove, it gets much easier because eating for your heart and
health becomes second-nature as time progresses. So
embrace your heart today and choose a heart-healthy future.
